How could the blind men have followed Jesus?

From the author’s journal.

From today’s Gospel reading:

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. (Mt 9:27–28 NAB)

My silly question is: How could the two blind men have followed Jesus if they couldn’t see? Despite their blindness, they were able to reach Him and approach Him. They were the ones who came to Jesus.

As silly as my question is, I reflected on it. And perhaps they were able to follow Jesus despite their blindness because of their faith. Truly, they walked by faith and not by sight.

Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” (Mt 9:29)

They were able to follow Jesus and be healed because of their faith.

Sometimes, I focus too much on my own blindness and wounds. I focus too much on my limitations. But, today’s reading (and the grace of God) reminds me to focus on my faith and on the One I am trying to follow.

Let’s pause and pray:

Lord, as I walk through this life, may I walk by faith and not by sight. May I focus on You and not on my own limitations, my wounds, my shortcomings, and my weaknesses. Like the blind men, may I have the desire to follow You and the belief that you can bring healing to my life. I trust in You.
